The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether meclizine, an antihistamine used to prevent or treat motion sickness, can help smokers quit smoking. This study will also investigate the potential relationship between genes you have inherited and success in quitting smoking.
This study consists of one physical screen and five study visits over a 9-week period. You may also be asked to come in for a follow-up visit six months after your quit day.
The physical exam will take approximately 2 to 2 ½ hours and includes a drug screen. If you test positive for illegal drugs, you will not be eligible to participate. The first study session will last approximately 1 to 1½ hours, and all other sessions will last approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. All of the five study visits will take place between 12PM and 4PM Monday through Friday.
If the physical screen confirms you are a good match for this study, you will be asked to return to the Center for five study visits. The first study visit will take place approximately one week after your screening study visit. At this time you will be asked to set your quit smoking date, which will occur 3 weeks later. During the early part of the study participants will be randomly assigned to one of three conditions: placebo capsules, 25mg meclizine or 50mg meclizine. All of these assignments will be made randomly, like drawing numbers from a hat.
During all study visits we will perform a breath test measuring the carbon monoxide in your breath, and collect a saliva sample. We will also measure your heart rate, blood pressure and weight, and you will also be asked to complete questionnaires about your mood and smoking. You will be given a diary to take home with you to record how many cigarettes you smoke, and study drug usage. You will also be given a supply of nicotine patches and/or study drugs that you will use until your next Study Visit.

Subjects who qualify and come back in for a follow-up study visit six months after their quit day, will receive an additional $60 check in the mail. |
