| Study summary: |

This study compares how two different medications, Lithium and Quetiapine (Seroquel), work in treating bipolar disorder. During the study participants will be asked to take Lithium or Quetiapine. This treatment study lasts 6 months. |
| Qualified participants must: |
|
Have bipolar disorder I or II
Be 18-68 years old
Not currently be taking Lithium or Quetiapine
Have some mood symptoms (depression or elevation) |
| Participants may receive: |
|
Participants will be paid $50 for each regular study visit they complete, (up to $450), and will be clinically monitored by a psychiatrist who specializes in treating bipolar disorder. |
