Study summary: This study is designed to determine which of two study medications works best for a given set of AD/HD symptoms (for example; inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity) in children. Each study medication is approved for the treatment of AD/HD by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). All participants will be evaluated for AD/HD as well as other psychological conditions, such as depression or anxiety, as part of their assessment. If it is determined that AD/HD is the primary diagnosis, participants will have the opportunity to try each study medication for up to 6 weeks under close clinical observation during weekly visits. Once the optimal dose level and treatment is determined, the participant can continue to receive study medication for three months at no cost. At the end of the study, you will receive a summary of your child’s progress as well as an appropriate referral for continuing treatment.
Qualified participants must: • Be ages 6-17
• Be able to speak and read English
• Display symptoms of AD/HD such as difficulty paying attention and organizing, losing or forgetting things, restlessness and trouble sitting still. Children may be inattentive, hyperactive/ impulsive, or both.
• Have never had prior treatment, or have a poor response to current AD/HD treatment.
• Be able to swallow pills.
• Be able to attend weekly appointments for up to 14 weeks (depending on rate of progress.)
• Have a teacher who can fill out questionnaires about child’s school performance.
Participants will receive: The study team will provide full psychological evaluations including IQ testing, achievement testing, and neuropsychological testing. All evaluations, study medication, and doctor visits will be provided at no cost. Compensation is provided for time and travel.
