Study summary:
Will flu get the best of you?  If so, we’re looking for volunteers to participate in a research study.
What is the AAVID-1 Study?
The study will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug for influenza in immunecompromised patients.
Who is Eligible to Participate?
You may be eligible for the AAVID-1 study if you are:
• Between the ages of 1 and 65
• Experiencing flu symptoms for less than 5 days, including a fever of 100°F (or higher) and headache, fatigue, cough, sore throat, congestion or muscle aches
• Immune-compromised due to:
– Solid organ or hematopoietic cell transplantation within 2 years
– Taking two immunosuppressants
– Chronic graft-versus-host-disease requiring immunosuppression
– Systemic chemotherapy within 3 months
– High dose corticosteroids within 30 days
– HIV-positive & CD4+ cell count <500µL within 90 days
Why Should I Participate in this Study? Clinical research is necessary to advance treatments for various diseases, including influenza. The results of this study will determine whether this investigational drug is safe and effective.
Participants will receive study drugs, associated physical exams, laboratory services and tests, at no charge, during their participation in the study. Throughout the study, participants will be monitored by a medical team. In addition, participants may receive reimbursement for their time and travel.
What are Study Participants Asked to Do? Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the current standard flu therapy, or the investigational therapy. There is a 50% chance of receiving the investigational drug, and 50% chance of receiving the standard therapy.
You Will be Asked to:
• Take investigational or standard drug in your home every 8 hours for 10 days (or 20 days, if flu symptoms persist)
• Have laboratory tests and study-related physical and clinical exams, including nasal swabs
• Be monitored for 38 days plus have monthly followup visits for 6 months
