A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, 26-week, muli-tcenter study with a 26-week extension to evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of JNJ-28431754 (Canagliflozin) as monotherapy in the treatment of subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus inadequately controlled with diet and exercise. |
| Qualified participants must: |

• Have type 2 diabetes
•
Be 18 and 80 years of age
•
Being treated with diet and exercise only OR one oral diabetes medication
|
| Participants will receive: |

Study medication, study related labs, study related exams by a doctor and compensation for time and travel. |
