Conditions: Lung Diseases - Herpesvirus Infections
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find a causal link between herpesvirus infection of the lung and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).
Study summary: We will be enrolling patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), emphysema, sarcoidosis, solitary coin lesion on chest radiograph, primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) or other lung diseases. We are also enrolling patients who have HIV with specific types of cancer and immune deficient patients. The purpose of this study is to find a causal link between herpesvirus infection of the lung and IPF. Samples from patients who do not have IPF will be used as the comparison group. We will be looking for evidence of infection with three herpesviruses that do not normally cause disease in people with healthy immune systems: Epstein Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, and human herpesvirus 8. Blood specimens will be tested for the presence of antibodies to these three viruses, and tissue samples will be tested for the presence of these viruses. IPF is a progressive disease where there is no proven treatment, other than lung transplant. Doctors do not know what causes IPF. We think that IPF is caused by a viral infection, particularly herpesvirus. The goal of this experiment is to prove that there is a link between IPF and herpesvirus. This information is important to help us develop new therapies to treat patients with IPF.
Criteria: Inclusion Criteria: - Diagnosis of IPF, emphysema, sarcoidosis, solitary coin lesion on chest radiograph, or PPH - Surgical lung biopsy, lung tissue from transplanted lung, or lobectomy tissue reviewed by Dr. Gal and pathologic diagnosis confirmed. Exclusion Criteria: - Failure of the patient to provide informed consent. - Insufficient lung tissue available to perform the analysis.
