| Purpose: |
|
RATIONALE: Collecting and storing samples of blood, bone marrow, and tissue from patients to
test in the laboratory may help in the study of cancer and other diseases in the future.
PURPOSE: This laboratory study is collecting blood, bone marrow, and tissue samples from
patients with HIV, herpes virus infection related to Kaposi's sarcoma, precancerous
conditions related to a virus, and/or cancer.

| Study summary: |
|
OBJECTIVES:
- Acquire serum, circulating cells, bone marrow, and tumor or normal tissue samples from
patients with HIV infection, Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpes virus infection,
viral-related pre-malignant lesions, and/or cancer.
OUTLINE: Patients may undergo blood collection at initial and subsequent visits. Bone marrow
aspirate or biopsy, thoracentesis, paracentesis, excisional or punch biopsy, and/or
fine-needle aspirate may be performed for the collection of tumor and healthy tissue. These
samples may undergo gene array, angiogenic cytokine (in Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpes
virus [KSHV]-infected cells), and other assays, as well as molecular studies of HIV,
including HIV protease, genotype, and phenotype. No germline mutation testing will be
performed (except HLA typing or genes that affect drug pharmacokinetics) unless the patient
gives consent. Patients may also undergo collection of urine, saliva, semen, and mucosal
cells of the skin, inside the mouth, genital regions, or anus. Also, a few hairs may be
obtained by plucking them with tweezers.
PROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 9,999 patients will be accrued for this study. |
