Conditions: Chronic Myeloproliferative Disorders - Leukemia - Lymphoma - Multiple Myeloma and Plasma Cell Neoplasm - Myelodysplastic Syndromes - Precancerous/Nonmalignant Condition - Unspecified Adult Solid Tumor, Protocol Specific
Purpose: RATIONALE: Collecting and storing samples of tissue, blood, hair follicle , and bone marrow from patients with cancer or healthy volunteers to study in the laboratory may help doctors learn more about cancer and the development of drug resistance in patients. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to collect and store tissue, blood, hair follicle, and bone marrow samples from patients with cancer or healthy volunteers to be tested in the laboratory.
Study summary: OBJECTIVES: - Create a repository of blood, serum, circulating cells, bone marrow, hair follicle, and tumor or normal tissue samples from adult patients with cancer or healthy volunteers that would allow development of assays for use in subsequent trials. OUTLINE: Blood samples may be obtained from patients or healthy volunteers during the first and subsequent visits. Tumor or normal tissue samples will be obtained if patients are undergoing a surgical or biopsy procedure by fine needle aspirate, removal of pleural or peritoneal fluid, or by excisional biopsy . Tumor or normal tissue (patients only) and hair follicle samples may be requested of patients or healthy volunteers not undergoing a surgical or biopsy procedure. Assays related to reversal of drug resistance may be performed on samples provided (no germline or genetic testing will be performed on any tissues collected). PROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 100 patients will be accrued for this study.
Criteria: DISEASE CHARACTERISTICS: - Diagnosed malignancy - Advanced or refractory disease - May or may not require surgical or biopsy procedure - Patients not requiring biopsy for medical indication are allowed for the purpose of obtaining research samples (e.g., blood, pleural fluid, or peritoneal fluid, or biopsy samples, providing the biopsy or aspiration procedure is of minimal risk [ i.e. fine needle aspirate, bone marrow aspirate, or excisional biopsy]). - No radiology test for use in a procedure to collect tissue samples that would not be otherwise used for appropriate medical indication - Must be on or in the process of being evaluated in the Medical Oncology Clinic of the National Cancer Institute for a research protocol - Normal volunteers are allowed PATIENT CHARACTERISTICS: - ECOG performance status 0-3 - Not pregnant - HIV negative - No history of clotting disorders in healthy volunteers PRIOR CONCURRENT THERAPY: - Not specified
