PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying the long-term effects of radiation therapy in treating young patients with a malignancy or precancerous syndrome.

Study summary:

OBJECTIVES: - Provide pediatric patients with malignancies of unique scientific interest, importance, and/or educational value access to radiotherapy. - Determine the overall, relapse-free, and disease-free survival of these patients. - Determine the local control and late sequelae in patients treated with radiotherapy. OUTLINE: Patients receive radiotherapy according to the standard of care for their diagnosis. Patients are followed at appropriate intervals for decades. PROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 1,000 patients will be accrued for this study within 5 years.

DISEASE CHARACTERISTICS: - Diagnosis of cancer or precancerous syndrome (e.g., aplastic anemia or other myelodysplastic syndromes) - Planning to receive or have previously received radiotherapy in the Radiation Oncology Branch, NCI - Diagnosis of special interest to Radiation Oncology Branch investigators for the purposes of natural history, pathogenesis, radiation response, late effects of disease process, or educational benefit PATIENT CHARACTERISTICS: Age - 6 months to 21 years Performance status - Not specified Life expectancy - Not specified Hematopoietic - Not specified Hepatic - Not specified Renal - Not specified Other - Not pregnant - Negative pregnancy test - Fertile patients must use effective contraception PRIOR CONCURRENT THERAPY: Biologic therapy - Not specified Chemotherapy - Not specified Endocrine therapy - Not specified Radiotherapy - See Disease Characteristics Surgery - Not specified Other - No other concurrent clinical trial participation in a trial studying radiotherapy
