  • Research Site Introduction:

We are performing studies to examine the microbiome in chronic fatigue Syndrome patients and are seeking normal controls to pair with existing patient subjects.  We have had a lengthy history of both NIH and privately funded studies in this area and are collaborating with top researchers in the fields of virology, metabolomics, proteomics and transcriptomics, as well as with top clinicians in this field.

  • Research Site Description:

Studies are performed at either or both of the following sites: private practice at 115 East 72nd street Suite 1A (between Park and Lexington Avenues) NYC 10021 and Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health at 168th Street and Broadway.

  • Patient Demographics:

At this time we are seeking the following types of patients in the New York City area (five boroughs); we accept subjects from nearby areas, i.e. New Jersey and Connecticut but transportation fees would not be covered.  The grant we are working with covers the cost of round trip car service.    In particular we are now seeking two normal white male subjects between the ages of 49 and 59; one male white subject aged 46 to 56; one female subject aged 45 to 55 and one block fmeale 46 to 56 years old.  The patients may have depression or thyroid disease but be well controlled.  They should not have cancer; active infections; be on antibiotics; or have elevated blood pressure or other types of significant cardiovascular disease.

  • Additional Information:

Please be aware that there are three separate visit involved: one to the private office located on East 72nd street between Park and Lexington avenues and two visits that take place on a Monday/Tues OR a Tues/Wed at either 9 am or 11 am.  The visit to the private office can take place any day of the weekend (after calling for an appt in advance) from hours of 9 am to 1 pm.  The visits up to Columbia take place ONLY on those times listed above.  Briefly patient will be screened at my private office.  This will take about 1/2 hour and involve signing a consent form and answering some questions.  The subject will then take home a large but lightweight box for future stool collection.  The subject will be contacted by Columbia research assistant to prepare for visit on a Mo/Tue or Tues/Wed and will bring stool sample from the night before (after being taught during the screening visit how to package it and refrigerate it in the box provided).  A very brief exercise test is carried out on the first visit day at Columbia and one tube of blood is drawn.  The subject is then given a second box to bring home and returns the following day to provide the `post exercise' stool sample and a tube of blood.  A gift card in the amount of $ 250 wil be provided on completion of this study
