Study Summary:
This is a 9 week study for subjects who have been diagnosed with Bipolar I Disorder and are currently experiencing a major depressive episode. This is only for subjects who are currently taking Lithium or Depakote. Subjects will remain on Lithium or Depakote and receive double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study medication.
Qualified Participants Must:
Have been previously diagnosed with Bipolar I Disorder and be on either Lithium or Depakote (or both) for at least 28 days
Be willing to provide authorization to obtain prior treatment records
Be depressed for the past 4 weeks and no longer than 12 months
Be between the ages of 18 and 75 years
Be in good general health
Be free of alcohol or substance abuse or dependence for at least 6 months
Meet other study enrollment criteria
Qualified Participants May Receive:
Free psychiatric and medical evaluation including routine laboratory testing.
