Study Summary:

The purpose of this research study is to:

  1. Assess the long-term effect of linagliptin compared to glimepiride on the occurence of cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke, cardiovascular death and hospitalization for angina pertoris (chest pain).

  2. Assess the effect of linagliptin compared to glimepiride on blood sugar control, weight gain, the need for additional anti-diabetic medication to control blood sugar and the occurence of hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) events.

  3. Assess the long-term safety of linagliptin compared to glimepiride asa a single treatment or as add-on therapy.

Qualified Participants Must:

• Have type II diabetes mellitus
• Have blood sugars that are not adequately controlled
• Have risk factors for cardiovascular (heart) disease and you may have had a previous cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke

Qualified Participants May Receive:

Compensation of $50 for completed study visit. No payment will be made for any study visits conducted by telephone, If the study is not completed for any reason, you will be paid for each study visit you do complete according to the schedule above.
