VNS (Vagus Nerve Stimulation) Therapy® is a treatment that has already been well studied and was approved by the FDA in 2005 for people with difficult-to-treat depression, also called treatment-resistant depression. But additional evidence of the benefits of VNS Therapy is needed by Medicare and other insurers before they will agree to cover it outside of a clinical trial. The RECOVER study will investigate the use of VNS Therapy in up to 1,000 people across the United States.
To join the RECOVER study you must be 18 years or older and:
- Currently depressed
- Have depression, or bipolar depression, that has lasted for at least two years or recurred several times
- Have tried at least four types of antidepressant treatments and not found them helpful
