Study Summary:

This is a randomized clinical trial of three different psychotherapies for chronic posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The study is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and conducted at New York State Psychiatric Institute at 168th Street and Riverside Drive in New York City. Eligible individuals are randomly assigned to 14 weeks of either: Prolonged Exposure, Interpersonal Psychotherapy, or Relaxation Therapy. Sessions are taped to ensure that therapists are delivering therapy properly. There is no cost to treatment aside from the work of completing interviews and self-report questionnaires. Patients who do not improve in treatment are offered three months of an alternative treatment at no cost. Patients receive up to $75 for completing all rating assessments.

Qualified Participants Must:

• Be between 18 and 65 years of age
• Have a primary diagnosis of chronic PTSD
• Be willing to stop any current treatment and not start additional treatment during the 14 weeks of the treatment study
• Not have certain other psychiatric disorders

Qualified Participants May Receive:

Expert treatment at no cost, and up to $75 for completing rating assessments.
