Study Summary:

This study examines the effects of a low and a high sodium diet on blood pressure and blood hormone levels in individuals with normal blood pressure and in individuals with borderline hypertension. Subjects will ingest each diet for five days (total duration of study is 10 days) during which the subject will stay on the research unit. This study will be carried out on the General Clinical Research Center at San Francisco General Hospital.


Qualified Participants Must:

• be 18-70 yrs of age
• have no chronic health problem requiring medication(s) which interfere with normal salt metabolism (all subjects)
• be prehypertensive (blood pressure 120-139 mm Hg systolic and/or 85-89 mm Hg diastolic) on no antihypertensive medications or have normal blood pressure
• and not be obese.


Qualified Participants May Receive:

Subjects will be paid $700 for completion of the 10 day study.
