Study summary

TAK-341-2001:A clinical trial for patients with possible or probable multiple system atrophy (MSA)

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a rare disease of the brain that affects multiple functions of the body, including blood pressure, breathing, urinary function, and movement. Early symptoms of MSA are similar to Parkinson’s—lightheadedness, body stiffness, trouble initiating movement, loss of balance, etc. Because of this, the first diagnosis for many patients who may have MSA is Parkinson’s disease. However, as the extent, severity, and type of symptoms change, a diagnosis of possible or probable MSA is more likely.

If you have (or a loved one has) symptoms that your doctor believes may be signs of MSA you might be unsure of where to turn. The journey from first symptoms to a diagnosis of possible or probable MSA and beyond can be confusing and frustrating. You are not alone. Joining a clinical study may be one option for you to think about.

What is the purpose of the study?

Medications and non-drug therapies may help with some MSA symptoms. However, there is currently no treatment to slow or prevent the progress of this disease. The TAK-341-2001 Study is testing an investigational drug (TAK-341) compared to placebo in people with possible or probable MSA. This will help answer important medical questions, such as:

  • How effective is TAK-341 in treating people with MSA?
  • How effective is TAK-341 in slowing the worsening (progression) of MSA?
  • How safe is TAK-341?
  • Are there any unwanted effects that might be related to the use of TAK-341?
  • How does the body’s defense system (immune system) react to TAK-341?

Who can take part in this study?

You may qualify to take part in this study if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with possible or probable MSA
  • Are at least 40 years old
  • Have had MSA symptoms for less than 4 years

There are other qualification requirements that the study doctor will review with you.
