Research Site Introduction:

BioCytics, meaning applications of living cells, is a privately-held biotechnology company located in Huntersville, North Carolina. BioCytics is clinically-incubated by Carolina BioOncology Institute Cancer Research Clinic. Our mission is to research and develop novel cellular therapies for diseases and to accelerate personalized medicine to market.

BioCytics was founded in 2005 by John Powderly MD, CPI, as a multi-dimensional biotech company to develop a Tissue Bank, Human Applications Laboratory, and BioInformatics & Data Mining group. The BioCytics team has historically focused on human blood product sourcing and banking, adoptive cell therapy development, and genetic testing & drug screening. Currently, BioCytics is performing IND-enabling studies for potential autologous cancer cell therapy products.

BioCytics is housed within Carolina BioOncology Institute, the only independent community-based cancer clinic fully dedicated to Phase 1 clincal trials.  This model enables efficient and rapid accrual to immunotherapy-based clinical trials when patients with stage IV cancer need them most.  

Research Site Description:

Headquartered in Huntersville, NC, outside of Charlotte,  Carolina BioOncology Institute (CBOI) and BioCytics provides quality cancer care in a convenient location. From Northern Mecklenburg County to Northern California, patients travel from near and far to take advantage of our access to cutting edge drugs. CBOI is aptly situated and equipped to handle each patient as a unique individual — not as a statistic.

Over the 16 year history of Carolina BioOncology Institute, BioCytics has had several iterations. Originally formed to investigate the clinical utility of circulating tumor cells (CTC) and to create a biobank, researchers worked out of a shared clinical lab with limited resources. Fast-forward to today, where there are now three large ISO-7 cleanrooms, two medium ISO-7 cleanroom suites, and a large GLP laboratory space. BioCytics is constantly growing and the scope of work changes to meet the public need, whether that be cancer immunotherapy or emerging viral diseases.

Patient Demographics:

At Carolina BioOncology Institute, we see patients with Stage 4 solid tumor cancers who are looking for phase 1 clinical trials.  They must have previously had standard of care treatment.

At BioCytics, we see patients with any stage of cancer or patients with autoimmune diseases for consideration of blood draws or leukapheresis. We are also looking for blood from healthy donors for studies.
