Summary:

Asthma Study for volunteers who live within 70 miles (1.5 hours by car) from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville VA.

Volunteers (ages 18 – 40 years old) are needed to screen for a study about asthma and the common cold. The ultimate goal of this research is to improve asthma care. The purpose of screening is to determine eligibility for the study about asthma and the common cold. Screening is ongoing and involves 2 visits. Volunteers will be compensated $40 for the first screening visit and $60 for the second.

Participants may be reimbursed $30.00 per trip to UVA depending on travel distance.

  • SCREENING VISIT 1 involves a blood draw and the completion of a questionnaire.
  • SCREENING VISIT 2 involves lung function testing to verify asthma (called a methacholine challenge test), an allergy evaluation and another blood draw.

Results of the allergy evaluation and lung function testing will be shared with the participants during the visit. Based on the results, you may qualify for additional studies with compensation.

Those who pass screening can participate in a longitudinal study for up to 12 weeks with additional payments.


Qualified Participants Must:

• Be between 18 and 40 years of age
• Have asthma
• Not smoke
• Live within 70 miles of the University of Virginia
