The purpose of this research is to compare the effects of Tai Chi Chih to health and wellness education in older adults
aged 60 or older, who suffer from symptoms of depression. Approximately 220 subjects will participate in this study.
We will measure cognitive functioning, performance, and mood in older subjects and compare the results of
the Tai Chi Chih and health and wellness education classes.
You will be randomly assigned to either a weekly 60 minute session of Tai Chi Chih or a health and wellness
educational course in the beginning of the trial. You will have a 50% chance of receiving a Tai Chi Chih class and a
50% chance of receiving health and wellness education. We will also conduct three brain MRI scans: one before and
one after the 12-week training, as well as one at the final 12-month follow-up visit. The first appointment
includes a psychiatric and medical evaluation. If you continue to qualify for the study, the entire study can last up to 1
year.
