Clinical Trial 57273

Hallandale, FL 33009

Summary:

Lupus - Multiple Locations in the US

The IRIS trial: A clinical trial for people living with active lupus nephritis (LN). This is an Autoimmune Trial & You trial.

It is estimated that 1.5 million Americans have lupus, and there are about 16,000 new cases each year. 1 The most common type of lupus is systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, lupus nephritis (LN) is a type of kidney disease caused by SLE. Kidney disease caused by lupus may progress and get worse over time, leading to kidney failure. Lupus nephritis is more common in males than in females. Kidney damage is one of the more common health problems caused by lupus. 2

What is IRIS?

Autoimmune disease such as lupus can greatly affect the quality of life. IRIS is working to hopefully find new treatments that are better at alleviating the symptoms of LN.

AstraZeneca understands the impact that autoimmune disease has on people’s quality of life. That’s why we’re working on trials such as IRIS to hopefully find new treatments that are better at alleviating the symptoms of LN.

IRIS is looking to see if a study therapy called SAPHNELO® may be effective in treating people with active LN.

SAPHNELO® is the brand name for the medication anifrolumab. This medication is a monoclonal antibody. It binds to the type I interferon receptor, blocking the activity of type I interferons such as interferon-a and interferon-B. 3 SAPHNELO® is already approved in the United States to treat adults with SLE, but it has not yet been approved by the FDA for LN, so its use in this trial is investigational.

How can I join IRIS?

IRIS may be right for you if you:

 • Are between 18 and 70 years old
 • Are receiving treatment for lupus nephritis but still have symptoms

Additional criteria may apply.
