Summary:
PEAK is a clinical research study for people with advanced colon or rectal cancer (also known as colorectal cancer). Colorectal cancer is considered “advanced” when it spreads (metastasizes) beyond nearby lymph nodes to other parts of the body. Surgery with the goal of curing the cancer is typically not an option at this stage.
Chemotherapy given in combination with targeted therapy is commonly prescribed by physicians in the treatment of advanced colorectal cancer. There are different types of targeted therapies but all of them are drugs that attack cancer cells in varying ways while attempting to minimize the damage to normal cells. Not all targeted therapies are indicated for use in combination with chemotherapy.
Clinical research studies often compare the effectiveness and safety of a standard cancer treatment regimen with an “investigational” treatment regimen that has not yet been fully evaluated, but which the medical community has reason to believe may help patients. The results of the study will help determine whether the investigational treatment is more effective than the standard treatment, equally effective or less effective.
PEAK stands for Panitumumab Efficacy in combination with FOLFOX6 Against bevacizumab in mCRC patients with wild-type KRAS.
The primary goal of the PEAK study is to learn whether an investigational targeted therapy given in combination with chemotherapy will delay the progression of colorectal cancer for a longer period of time than the standard treatment.
The PEAK study is open to people with advanced colorectal cancer who meet study enrollment criteria.
