Summary:
Influenza is a respiratory illness, commonly referred to as ‘the flu’ that spreads easily and can cause mild to severe illness. Our goal is to better understand how the immune system in the nose and in the blood responds to the flu and how flu is transmitted in the environment. Our ultimate goal is to help develop better vaccines and drugs to protect against or fight the flu. The purpose of this study is to help us better understand how the body’s immune system responds to the influenza virus throughout the course of and right after infection.
Qualified Participants Must:
Be between the ages of 18-49
Be a non-smoker
Not have a history of asthma
Not have household or daily contact with children under the age of 5 or persons older than 65
Be willing to undergo exposure to the flu virus
Be willing to be admitted for a hospital stay of 9 days
Qualified Participants May Receive:
• $50 for the first screening visit
• $75 for the second screening visit
• $350 for each inpatient day
• $75 for each follow-up clinic visit
• $25 for telephone follow-up visit
• $50 for unscheduled visits, if needed
